COURSE DESCRIPTION AND MAPS

IMPORTANT UPDATE 5th January: Course Changes

We are all very aware of the dryness of our environment and the fire risks at this stage. Total fire bans and closure of various parts of the Queensland Trail network including HQ Plantation are presently in place. Through quite an extensive series of consultation we are pleased to have had an amended course map accepted and approved for the 2020 Hares and Hounds event for Sunday 19 January. As in previous years the course is an
"out and back" course, which is why km markings exist only to 25km. This new course predominately utilises State Forest and the Glasshouse Mtns Conservation Park.  Please carefully review the new course maps and descriptions below:

50km Solo and Relay

Woodford – 5.7km
50km Solo and Relay runners only

All events start outside the Woodford Pool (P) on Peterson Rd, head down Petersen Rd to its end and straight ahead into a narrow rough bush track. Turn right at its end and run the perimeter road of the forest to Chambers Rd. At 1.5km turn left onto the bitumen road and follow same road which turns into dirt all the way to the intersection of Chambers and Raaens Rds.

Checkpoint 1 and Changeover 1 for 3 & 4 person teams is on this corner.

Relay team vehicles can park off the road at the intersection. Please do not block runner’s course or line of sight for signage. As the intersection is on the crest of a hill it is not advisable to park on Raaens Rd.

Bracalba East (Cook's Climb) – 6.5km
50km Solo and Relay runners only.

Continue east on the track under the telegraph line which runs parallel with Raaens Rd for 500m until it peters out and joins Raaens Rd. Cross over the bitumen road at this point as it is too risky on the crest of the hill and turn right into McConnell Rd. and run up the dirt road for 1km to reach a gate, which is under the major transmission lines. This will be Checkpoint 2 but will not be a changeover until Cook’s Climb has been conquered. Pass through the gate and head downhill for 1km to the Mango Trees trailhead. Turn left and left again in 50 meters to head downhill along the original Bracalba Trail. After 1.3km this trail will reconnect with QNPWS trail number 1. Turn left and in 400m turn left again to traverse Cook’s Climb for 1km. On the return journey you will come careering down this steep climb so caution should be a top priority. At the intersection of the walking track turn left for recovery and follow to its end and turn right and Checkpoint 2 is 100m further on at the gate.

Checkpoint 2 and Changeover 2 for 3 & 4 person teams.

CREW vehicles cannot drive all the way to Checkpoint 2 but must park about 500m short of it and walk the rest of the way if they wish to see their runner..

Bracalba West (Railway Line) – 5.5km
50km Solo and Relay runners only.

Head downhill again for 1km to the Mango Trees trailhead. Turn right and follow the old railway line (QNPWS Trail number 3) to the gate at Raaens Rd. No turn off along this section.

This is Checkpoint 3 and Changeover 3 for 3 & 4 person teams.

Relay team vehicles can park on the sides of Raaens Rd. Do not block gate as this will be used for emergency access when required.

Bracalba West (Roll-a-coaster) – 7.3km
50km Solo and Relay runners only.

Take the steep downhill track to the left for 1km and re-join Trail number 3 again. Via right and follow for about 1km where after negotiating a steep downhill followed by a creek crossing the trail 3 goes left you will go right to continue following the fence line. The route will use only some sections of trail number 3 so follow our course markings carefully and don’t add extra kms. Our course is basically following the fence line of the reserve. Around 21km you will follow trail number 3 back to Mylett Rd, turn left towards the Mango trees trailhead and then up the hill to Checkpoint 2.

Checkpoint 2 and Changeover 4 for 2, 3 & 4 person teams.

Ultra runners will have a weight check at this point.

Halfway, now do the course in the reverse direction.

The Checkpoint Chart will indicate the course sections that you will be covering. This describes all sections you will need to navigate your route from them. Write the order of your event checkpoints on your arm or race bib.
